Stumpwork is a method of embroidery where 3 dimensional sculptures are created using embroidery thread. Typically, 3 to 6 strands of thread are used but I have created the Moss & Lichen Reflections in the very finest stitches using mainly, single strand embroidery thread. The result is an extremely intricate expression of the detail of moss/lichen detail.

The moss grow on the decaying wood in damp conditions absorbing fine droplets through their leaves. Spores are shown at the base of the twig.

This piece has been created using a variety of techniques, bullion knots for the moss in parts, long and short stitch and beading. Clumps are padded with alpaca fibre. The moss and lichen are stitched in a multitude of bright and muted greens and cream/sable.

The cream linen stumpwork is padded with a bamboo lining then stretched and laced onto a mounting board. This is float framed in a handcrafted wooded frame, with a medium oak finish.
