Stumpwork is a method of embroidery where 3 dimensional sculptures are created using embroidery thread.

Ammonites are spectacularly abundant in Lyme Regis and may be found in rocks as they are split or simply lying on the beach. It’s eye watering to imagine that 200 million years ago, these creatures, jet propelled, swam together in the sea, and as they died, were entombed in rock forming silt. So when an ammonite fossil is broken from rock, you are the first person to see it in 200 million years!

I like to think of the released ammonites in the surf, dancing together again and this embroidered piece is my homage to that thought. Featuring the ammonites in the surf of the beaded waves along with many iconic features of this seaside town, the beach huts, the famous cliff gardens, ammonite lamp posts and the ever present sea gulls, all are stitched together.

‘A Moment in Lyme’ has been created using a variety of techniques, padded satin stitch and bullion knots for the ammonites, long and short stitch with french knots for the huts. Ribbon and beads offer detail all over laid with hand engraved lettering on non reflective glass. The engraving reads…“Ancient imprints escape their tombTo whirl in the waves once more”

The cream linen stumpwork embroidery is padded with a bamboo lining then stretched and laced onto conservation board. This is double mounted and framed in a white driftwood box frame with non reflective glass.
